Alcatraz Island and San Francisco

Interior view of a jail cell, featuring metal bars, a small sink, and a toilet.

I’ve always wanted to visit Alcatraz Island, and tour the prison (which is a National Park) but Jan and I never got around to it when we lived in the Bay Area. I’m not sure why…we made it to some of the other parks in the area. I had some free time last summer, and decided to stay a few nights in the City (San Francisco), and do the Alcatraz tour. Definitely worth the pain of staying in SF – it was a really crummy day (fog), but the prison tour was fantastic, and I enjoyed walking around the island. Once I got off the ferry back in SF, I also visited the WWII Liberty ship, and then did a bit of city photography as I wandered back to the hotel. A really nice, short, trip.

Escape to (and from) Alcatraz

My big day did not start too well – I tweaked my back somehow walking around, and it hurt pretty bad in the morning. A couple of Ibprofin helped, and I Uber’d over to the Alcatraz Ferry stop (Pier 33) rather than walking again. Good move. And, it was a crummy morning – cold, damp…

A short trip to a big city

Stuck in Northern California for medical reasons, the author plans short trips and finally visits Alcatraz, a long-desired destination. Reflecting on past visits to San Francisco, they enjoy two nights at a Hilton with stunning views, explore the city’s sights, and conclude Day 1 at the hotel bar during the NBA finals.
