Baja Collection

A gray whale surfacing in the ocean, with its back showing above the water and distant hills in the background.
Gray Whale in Magdalena Bay

I’ve now been to Baja twice in the past two years – once on a National Geographic cruise which started in Magdalena Bay to view the Gray Whales, and then worked our way around the Baja Peninsula back to Loreto, where we started. We did not get close to the whales, but it was still a fun trip – Baja is beautiful, and aside from hiking and snorkeling with sealions, we got a really good dose of the culture as well. The second trip was my dissasterous trip to a whale camp, way down in a very thinly populated part of Baja. If you have not read those posts yet, check them out.

I have another trip scheduled this year, and will hopefully continue visiting in the future.

Gray Whales in Baja Mexico

Despite hopes for close encounters with Gray Whales, the trip focused more on Humpbacks with missed photography opportunities. They also explored eco-tourism efforts and enjoyed the scenic beauty of Baja. Overall, the experience was rewarding but had challenges.
